Belton, Texas
Belton is a small Central Texas town between Austin and Waco, with a courthouse square that's been there since 1850 and a lake that fills the western edge of the county. Lake Belton holds 12,000 acres of clean water with a limestone shoreline — one of the lesser-known Hill Country lakes, which is part of the appeal.
The town is small. The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor sits a few blocks off the square. Fort Cavazos (formerly Fort Hood) is twenty minutes west — one of the largest military installations in the country — so the rhythm of Belton runs in part on the rhythm of the base.
People come here for the lake, for the rivers (the Leon and Lampasas feed into it), and for the slower pace. Salado is fifteen minutes south — antiques, springs, and a few good restaurants. Austin is an hour. Waco is forty minutes. It's a base for getting outside, not a destination for nightlife.
