Round Rock, Texas
Round Rock is north of Austin, just up I-35. It used to be a small farming town — the 'round rock' is a real one, in Brushy Creek, that wagon trains used as a crossing landmark. Now it's a fast-growing suburb with Dell's headquarters, the Round Rock Express minor-league baseball team, and a downtown that's quietly become worth visiting.
The pull here is practical. You're 25 minutes from downtown Austin without paying Austin prices, ten minutes from the tech corridor, and a short drive from Lake Travis, the Hill Country, and the outlet malls people drive in for. It's family-friendly — good schools, parks, soccer fields, the kind of place where weeknights are quiet and weekends are busy.
The original Round Rock Donuts is here. So is Old Settlers Park, Dell Diamond, and a downtown square that's been restored without being made cute. Good base for guests visiting Austin who don't want to stay in the middle of it.
