Gruene and New Braunfels, Texas

About this place

New Braunfels was founded by German settlers in 1845 and never quite lost the accent. It sits where the Comal and Guadalupe rivers meet, halfway between Austin and San Antonio, and the rivers are most of the reason people come here. The Comal is the shortest navigable river in the country — cold, spring-fed, and packed with tubers most weekends from May to September.

Just up the road, Gruene (pronounced 'green') is a 19th-century cotton town that's been kept mostly intact. Gruene Hall is the oldest continuously operating dance hall in Texas — Willie Nelson, George Strait, and a long list of Texas songwriters have played its plywood stage. The Gristmill restaurant next door sits in a converted mill above the river.

This is family-trip territory in summer, two-step territory year-round, and a good base for Hill Country day trips. Schlitterbahn, the original waterpark, is in town. Wimberley and Driftwood are 30 minutes north. San Antonio is 45 minutes south.

Local FAQ

Quick answers.

When is tubing season?

Memorial Day through Labor Day is peak. Outfitters run weekends in May and September too, weather depending.

Can we walk to Gruene Hall?

Depends on the property. Most New Braunfels rentals are a short drive — Gruene itself is walkable once you're there.

Is Schlitterbahn worth it?

Yes, especially for kids. Buy tickets online to skip the gate line.

What about Wurstfest?

10-day German festival in early November — book early, the town fills up.

How crowded does the river get?

Very, on summer weekends. Weekday floats are calmer.

Is the water safe to drink?

City tap water is fine. River water is for floating, not drinking.
