Brenham, Texas
Brenham sits halfway between Houston and Austin, in the rolling country of Washington County. It's small, settled, and best known for two things: Blue Bell Creameries, which has been making ice cream here since 1907, and bluebonnets, which carpet the surrounding pastures every spring.
The town has a courthouse square, a few good restaurants, and the kind of antique stores that haven't been priced for tourists yet. Independence is fifteen minutes north — the original capital of the Republic of Texas, now a quiet historic site. Round Top, the famous antiques fair town, is twenty minutes east. The Brazos River winds through the southern edge of the county.
Most guests come for a long weekend — bluebonnet drives in March and April, antiques runs in spring and fall, ice cream tour at Blue Bell, dinner in town, sunset on a porch with a view of cattle. It's slower than Austin and quieter than Houston, and that's the point.
