Canyon Lake, Texas
Canyon Lake sits in the Hill Country between San Antonio and Austin — an 8,000-acre lake formed in the 1960s when the Guadalupe River was dammed. The water is clear, sometimes startlingly so, and the limestone shoreline gives it the look of a Caribbean lake set in cedar country.
Below the dam, the Guadalupe River runs cold year-round — spring-fed from the lake's depths — and its tailrace is one of the only stretches of trout water in Texas. Above the dam, the lake is for boating, swimming, scuba (yes, really — visibility hits 30+ feet on good days), and the cliffs along the north shore.
Towns ring the lake — Canyon Lake itself, Sattler, Startzville — but the area stays mostly rural. New Braunfels and Gruene are 25 minutes south. San Antonio is 45 minutes. Austin is an hour. The pull here is water, hill country, and a slower pace than Lake Travis.

Yes — eight public parks with swim areas. The water is genuinely clear.
Is the Guadalupe River good for tubing?
Yes — the section below the dam is classic Hill Country tubing. Cold even in August.
What about scuba?
Surprisingly good — clear water, sunken trees, occasional 30+ foot visibility. Several dive shops in the area.
Are there cliffs to jump from?
Some, but check current local rules — access varies by park and water level.
How is fishing?
Striped bass, smallmouth, catfish in the lake. Trout below the dam — a Texas rarity.
