Helenwood, Tennessee

About this place

Helenwood is a small unincorporated community in Scott County, Tennessee — right on the doorstep of Big South Fork National River and Recreation Area. The Cumberland Plateau here is forested, rugged, and quiet. Sandstone bluffs, hardwood ridges, deep gorges that the New River and Big South Fork have been carving for a long time.

This is not a tourist town. There's a gas station, a few small businesses, and ridgeline views that go on for miles. What you come here for is the land. Big South Fork covers more than 125,000 acres — horseback riding, hiking, whitewater, sandstone arches, and overlooks where you can see all the way across the gorge.

Oneida is the nearest larger town, ten minutes north — small grocery, a couple of restaurants, basics. Knoxville is 75 minutes south for a real city. The Smokies proper are a 90-minute drive. Most guests stay close to the property and the park, and that's the point of being here.
