Houston, Texas

About this place

Houston is the fourth-largest city in the country and the most international by some measures — over 145 languages spoken, the most diverse big city in America. It sprawls. It's hot. It moves at the pace of a place that's still growing into itself, and the food — Vietnamese, Tex-Mex, Cajun, Indo-Pak, southern barbecue, Gulf seafood — is one of the great unsung restaurant scenes in the U.S.

There's a Museum District with 19 institutions in walking distance. Hermann Park sits next to the medical center, the largest in the world. The Galleria is the country's eighth-largest mall. NASA's Johnson Space Center is south of town. The Astros, Rockets, and Texans all play within a few miles of downtown. Buffalo Bayou Park has been transformed into one of the best urban green spaces in Texas.

What Houston isn't: walkable in any continuous way. You'll drive everywhere. But once you stop fighting the city's geography and accept the trade — sprawl for variety — it opens up.
