Big South Fork, Tennessee

About this place

Oneida is the small Scott County town that Shadow Pine and the Woodsman call home — the cabins sit down a quiet country road about 10 minutes from Big South Fork National River and Recreation Area and 15 minutes from downtown Oneida itself.

Oneida isn't trying to be a resort town, and that's part of what makes it work. Downtown has Gather Coffee Lounge for espresso and baked goods, Big South Fork Brewing in a renovated historic bank building, Ruth's Little Asian Kitchen for Filipino food and sushi, and The Grizzly for steaks and burgers. A Walmart Supercenter covers groceries and gear. A few minutes further, the community of Helenwood has its own grocery store, Helenwood Foods IGA, plus R&J Produce for local honey and jam, and Flonnie's Drive-In for burgers and milkshakes.

What most guests come for, though, is Big South Fork itself — more than 125,000 acres of gorge, sandstone bluffs, and hardwood forest, with hiking, horseback riding, and whitewater a short drive from the cabin door. Knoxville is roughly 75 minutes south if you want a bigger city for the day, but most guests just stay close to the land and the two cabins tucked into it.
