Kilgore, Texas
Kilgore is a small East Texas town with an oversized history. In 1930, the East Texas Oil Field — the largest in the lower 48 — was discovered just outside town, and Kilgore became one of the busiest oil patches in the country almost overnight. At one point, the World's Richest Acre downtown had derricks packed shoulder to shoulder. Some are still standing as monuments.
Today the town is quieter. The East Texas Oil Museum on the Kilgore College campus tells the story well. The Rangerettes — the country's first precision drill team, founded here in 1939 — still perform. The pine woods of East Texas are everywhere outside the city limits, and Lake Cherokee, Martin Creek, and the Sabine River are within a short drive.
Kilgore works as a base for an East Texas trip. Tyler is twenty minutes west — the rose capital of the country. Longview is fifteen minutes northeast. Caddo Lake, the only natural lake in Texas, is 90 minutes east. Slower country, taller pines, more humidity than the Hill Country — a different Texas.
