Lake Austin, Texas

About this place

Lake Austin is the stretch of the Colorado River that winds through the western neighborhoods of the city — Lake Hills, River Place, the hill-country edge where Austin remembers it has terrain. Unlike Lake Travis, which draws the crowds, Lake Austin feels like a neighborhood. Private docks, boathouses, herons standing in the shallows, and a strip of businesses along Lake Austin Boulevard that have been there long enough to feel like they belong.

The water here is flat and sheltered, good for kayaking, paddleboarding, and slow mornings on a boat. Ski Shores, the classic dockside café, has been letting boats pull up since 1954. Mozart's has the best deck in Austin. The Oasis, perched on the cliffs above Lake Travis twenty minutes west, still has the most famous sunset view in Central Texas.

You're twenty minutes from downtown, fifteen from the Domain, and as close to the Hill Country as you can get without leaving the city. It's one of the few parts of Austin where the pace actually slows down.
